Hong Kong Studio Flash Photography Workshop

The Flash Photography Private Workshop is a one-time session for photographers looking to elevate their shooting by learning how to use off-camera lighting with portable hot-shoe speedlights and studio flash. The objective of the session will be to understand the characteristics and properties of light by shooting a live model with studio and portable flash lighting equipment. You will have the option to either i) select a model from a model agency that we trust, or ii) bring-your-own-model eg. your spouse or child and you will keep all photos shot.

The private session is 3 hours and takes place in our studio in Wanchai, Hong Kong.

The workshop is NOT for beginners and it is required that you have prior:

  • basic understanding of camera manual controls (aperture, shutter, ISO), OR
  • completion of either Photography 101 or New Camera

You should take the workshop if you are a photographer who owns a DSLR camera and:

  • wants to learn how to use studio flash
  • owns a flash (eg. 580EXII, SB-900) but doesn’t know how to use it
  • is looking to buy a new flash but wants to learn how to use one first

You will leave with:

  • a set of images from the photoshoot with studio-quality lighting and backdrops
  • an understanding of the differences in the quality of light between small hot-shoe flash and studio flash using modifiers such umbrellas, softboxes, beauty dishes, grids, snoots and reflectors
  • an understanding of how to wirelessly trigger off-camera flash through various radio and infrared systems
  • exposure to posing and guiding a model
  • access to email your instructor with questions to help you learn at anytime

Course outline:

  • Part I (1 hour): Portrait lighting fundamentals (camera settings, small portable flash vs. studio flash, off-camera triggers)
  • Part II (2 hours): Portrait photoshoot with actual model
